Replica Watch Knowledge

Are replica watches waterproof? Can they be used for swimming or diving?

The water resistance of a watch does not depend on whether it is a “replica” or not, but rather on the watch’s design. Many genuine watches only support everyday water resistance and are not suitable for swimming or diving. In the watch industry, a water resistance rating below 100 meters is considered suitable only for everyday use. Here’s how to determine what type of water resistance a watch supports:

The key to whether a watch supports deep water resistance is the design of the crown. For example, the Cartier watch shown below has a push-pull crown for time adjustment, which only supports everyday water resistance.

The IWC watch shown below, which features chronograph functions, has two mechanical push buttons on the side. This design also supports only everyday water resistance. The chronograph buttons are sealed under spring pressure and cannot withstand high underwater pressure.

The Rolex Submariner shown below, however, is designed for deep water resistance. Its crown is secured with a rotating lock that can handle higher underwater pressure.

The Omega Seamaster shown below is also designed for deep water resistance. Generally, if a genuine watch supports deep water resistance, the replica of that model will follow the original design.

Finally, not all chronograph watches lack deep water resistance. For instance, the Rolex Daytona is an exception, as its chronograph buttons are equipped with “locks” that can be rotated to secure them, allowing for deep water resistance when locked.

This article aims to help you understand which types of watches support deep water resistance and which designs only support everyday water resistance.
